Skin appearance is where the red light category makes its boldest claims and its weakest arguments. It is also where the gap between what is knowable and what is asserted is widest. Rather than adding another confident page to that pile, this one is about how the claims work: what "skin appearance" means as a category of claim, how appearance is measured when someone bothers to measure it, why photographs are the weakest possible evidence and the most heavily used, and what we will and will not tell you about our own products.

The short answer: what does red light do for skin appearance?
Red and near-infrared light is absorbed by tissue and there is an active research literature examining its effects on skin. What that literature supports at consumer doses, in consumer devices, is not established. Vyalight makes no claims about what a device will do to your skin, and we would treat any seller who does with caution.

Why the phrase "skin appearance" exists
It is not marketing softening. It is a real distinction with regulatory weight behind it.
A claim about how skin looks is a cosmetic claim. A claim about changing the structure or function of the body is a different kind of claim entirely, and a product making one is asserting something that requires a different level of evidence and, potentially, a different regulatory status.
Under FDA's general wellness policy — revised in January 2026 — a product stays outside device regulation when its intended use is maintaining or encouraging a general state of health or a healthy activity, and it must not reference specific diseases, clinical conditions or diagnostic thresholds. That boundary is assessed across everything a company publishes: product copy, blog articles, image captions, advertising and social posts.
So when you see a page carefully saying "the appearance of" something, one of two things is happening. Either the company understands the boundary and is staying inside it, or the company is using the phrase as a fig leaf while the surrounding page makes the stronger claim anyway. The way to tell is to read what the rest of the page implies.
How skin appearance is actually measured
When researchers assess appearance properly, they use methods with known weaknesses rather than photographs with unknown ones.

Why photographs fail
It is worth being specific, because "photos can be misleading" is too weak a statement for how badly they fail.
- Lighting direction. Light from above and in front flattens surface texture; light from the side rakes across it and exaggerates every irregularity. Switching between the two produces a dramatic apparent change with no change in the skin.
- Colour temperature. Warmer light reads as healthier. This is trivially adjustable.
- Expression. A relaxed face and a slightly tensed one differ visibly around the eyes and mouth.
- Time of day. Facial fluid distribution changes through the day. Morning and evening photographs of the same person differ.
- Distance and lens. Focal length changes facial proportions substantially.
- Processing. Smoothing is a default on many phone cameras and does not announce itself.
Any one of these can produce more visible difference than the intervention being advertised. Used together, they can produce almost any result desired without a single dishonest word being written.

Five questions to ask of any claim
Use these on any brand in this category. They are the same questions we would want asked of us.
- Is the claim about appearance, or about the body? "Looks smoother" and "changes the structure of skin" are different claims requiring different evidence.
- Is there a study, and how big was it? Twelve people for four weeks is a pilot, not a finding.
- Was it blinded and controlled? Appearance assessments without blinding are close to worthless because expectation drives them.
- Were the light parameters reported? Wavelength, irradiance, distance, duration, dose, session count. Without these, the study cannot be linked to any product.
- Does the studied device resemble the one being sold? This is where most citations fail. A clinical device at a controlled distance tells you little about an unmeasured consumer mask.
A page citing a dozen studies while answering none of these is citing volume, not evidence.
What is reasonably established, and what is not

The 2025 GeroScience review states directly that mechanisms are "not entirely understood", that methodology across the field is "ill-defined", and that most work has been conducted in animal models. That is a description of an active field partway through its work, not a dismissal — but it is a long way from the certainty in most advertising.

What we will not tell you: that a device will change how your skin looks. We do not publish before-and-after photographs. We do not name conditions. We do not offer outcome guarantees. We do not describe our products as clinically validated, and we do not have a clearance.
Where our own documentation is incomplete: neither of our masks publishes wavelengths in nanometres, because our supplier documentation specifies emitter counts and brightness levels but not wavelengths. We leave that row blank rather than fill it with a plausible figure. If published wavelengths are a requirement for you, buy a mask that has them.

An honest page has to include this, and almost none do.

If the first four rows are not in place, the last row is not where your money should go. We would rather say that and be trusted than not say it and make a sale.
How to evaluate your own experience
You are running an experiment with a sample size of one, no control and no blinding. That is a weak design, and there are still ways to make it less weak.
- Change one variable. Not a device, a serum and a sleep schedule in the same fortnight.
- Fix the photography. Same light source, same time of day, same angle, same distance, no makeup, no filters. Light source is the one that ruins most comparisons.
- Write notes weekly and read them before looking at photographs at the end. Reversing that order lets the images rewrite what you remember.
- Set the review date in advance. Eight to twelve weeks, decided on day one, so the verdict is not delivered by whichever week you happen to feel discouraged.
- Accept an ambiguous result. "I cannot tell" is the most common honest answer in this category and it is a legitimate one.

What would convince you that consumer devices work for skin appearance?
Adequately powered, blinded, controlled human trials at doses consumer devices actually deliver, with light parameters fully reported, and independent measurement of device output at a stated distance. None of that is exotic. It is simply not standard yet.
Should I buy a device at all, then?
That is a reasonable question to end on. If your routine already includes daily sun protection and you will use a device consistently, the cost per session is low and the safety profile is good. If you need certainty about outcomes, this category cannot supply it and you should keep your money.
