How to Choose a Red Light Belt for Your Wellness Routine

Belts are the most-bought format in the body half of this category, and the one where specification sheets are least comparable between brands. Two belts advertising similar numbers can differ threefold in what those numbers count, and neither seller is necessarily being dishonest.

This guide is about reading them properly: the eight checks that actually distinguish belts, why LED count is the number to distrust, how to size one so it does not slide, and where the two Vyalight belts sit — including the row where one of them has no figure at all.

The short answer: how do you choose a red light belt?

Check that it fits your measurements with room to spare, that the emitting panel covers the area you care about rather than the strap, that wavelengths are published in nanometres, that it has defined timer settings rather than an on switch, that it charges over USB-C, and that the warranty covers the whole device rather than the LEDs alone.

The eight checks

1. Fit and adjustment range

The check people skip and then regret. Measure the circumference of where you intend to wear it — waist, lower back, thigh — over the clothing you would realistically have on, and compare to the belt's stated range. Aim to sit comfortably inside the range rather than at its limit, because a belt at full extension will not stay put.

Look for a long hook-and-loop panel rather than a short one, and for a strap that adjusts at two points if the belt is large.

2. Where the emitting panel actually sits

A belt is usually a light panel in the middle of a long strap. What matters is the size of the panel and where it lands when the belt is fastened, not the total length of the belt. Some belts advertise impressive dimensions that are mostly strap.

Check whether the panel is a single wide array or a run of smaller segments — segmented panels conform better around a curve, which usually means better contact.

3. Wavelengths

Published in nanometres, or not published. Consumer belts cluster on 660 nm visible red and 850 nm near-infrared, which sit inside the range appearing in the research literature — the 2025 GeroScience review lists 660, 670, 810, 830 and 850 nm among wavelengths studied.

Where a belt combines both, the ratio matters more than most pages let on. Our 105-LED belt is specified at 105 red chips at 660 nm and 210 near-infrared chips at 850 nm — a deliberate two-to-one weighting towards the invisible band, which is what you would expect for a device worn over the torso where the target is deeper than skin surface.

4. LED count, and what it is counting

This is the number that sells belts and the one to distrust.

Our two belts illustrate the problem: one is described as 120 LEDs, the other as 105 LEDs with 315 chips. The second number is larger by chip count and smaller by package count. Neither description is wrong, and a straight comparison between them — or with another brand's figure — is not meaningful without knowing the unit.

Ask: how many packages, how many chips, over what panel area.

5. Session control

Defined timer settings with automatic shut-off. The research describes a biphasic dose response in which intermediate doses outperform both smaller and larger ones, so an indefinite on switch is a design failure rather than a bonus.

Look also for whether light modes and timing modes are independent. Our 105-LED belt has five light modes and three timing modes as separate settings, which is more flexible than a device where duration is bundled into a mode.

6. Power and charging

Cordless belts get used more, because a cable across a room is a deterrent and because the point of a belt is being able to move while wearing it. Check the charging standard — USB-C is the sensible default in 2026, and a proprietary barrel connector is a spare part you will eventually need and not be able to find.

Where a manufacturer publishes battery capacity in mAh, that is useful. Where they publish sessions per charge instead, that is a reasonable substitute.

7. Strap material and controls

Anything worn against skin for half an hour needs to breathe. Look for breathable fabric on the contact side and a cleanable surface.

Controls should be reachable while seated and wearing the belt. A control panel that ends up behind you is a genuine annoyance.

8. Warranty scope

LEDs typically outlast everything around them. Batteries, hook-and-loop panels, seams, connectors and massage motors are the realistic failure points, so a warranty covering only the array is close to worthless. Every Vyalight device carries a two-year warranty covering the device.

Sizing a belt properly

Returns in this format are overwhelmingly about fit, and almost all of them are avoidable with a tape measure and two minutes.

  1. Measure where you will actually wear it, not your trouser size. For a lower back position that is usually around the narrowest part of the waist or just below; for a mid-torso position it is wider. Measure both if you are unsure.
  2. Measure over the clothing you would realistically wear during a session. A belt sized to bare skin will be tight over a jumper.
  3. Measure sitting down. Waist circumference increases when seated, often by several centimetres, and you will be seated for the session.
  4. Aim for the middle of the stated range. A belt at the top of its range has no closure overlap left, which is where sliding and gapping start.
  5. Check the panel lands where you want it. Fasten it and look: if the closure is at the front, the panel should be centred behind you, not off to one side.
  6. Re-check after two minutes. Straps settle and hook-and-loop beds in. Most fit problems appear early and adjust out easily.

If a belt only stays put when it is tight enough to leave marks, it is the wrong size, not a belt that needs breaking in. Inside the return window, that is a returns question.

Neither is more legitimate. Massage and warmth are sensations rather than outcomes, and we would rather describe them that way than let them be mistaken for evidence that the light is doing something.

Two things are worth saying plainly about that table. The 105-LED belt is the better-documented device and the one we would point a specification-led buyer towards, despite the smaller headline number. And the 120-LED belt has blanks where our supplier documentation does not specify a figure — we have left them blank rather than fill them with something plausible.

Six red flags

  1. An LED count with no panel dimensions. A number without an area.
  2. "Red and infrared" with no nanometres. Unverifiable.
  3. An irradiance figure with no measurement distance. Uninterpretable.
  4. No timer, or an indefinite on switch.
  5. Named medical conditions in the copy. A general wellness device advertising against conditions is overclaiming.
  6. A warranty badge with no terms behind it. Find the actual terms before buying.

Questions to ask a seller

  • What wavelengths, in nanometres, and in what ratio?
  • Is the emitter figure counting packages or chips?
  • What are the panel dimensions, as distinct from the belt length?
  • What is the adjustment range?
  • What are the timer settings, and does it shut off automatically?
  • What charging connector?
  • What does the warranty cover, for how long, and who pays return shipping?

How many LEDs should a red light belt have?

The wrong question, because the unit is not standardised. Ask instead about panel area, wavelengths and the chip-versus-package distinction. A well-documented 105-LED belt can carry more emitting chips than a 120-LED one.

Should a belt have both red and near-infrared?

For a device worn over the torso, a combination is the common design and a sensible default, since near-infrared travels further into tissue than visible red. What matters more is that the wavelengths are published at all.

How tight should a belt be?

Snug enough not to slide, loose enough to slide two fingers underneath. Fasten it in the position you will be sitting in, not standing up, or it will be too tight the moment you sit.

Can I wear a belt over clothing?

Fabric reduces the light reaching skin, thick or dark material considerably. Direct contact is better where practical; a thin layer is a reasonable convenience trade-off.

How long should a belt session be?

The device's timed programme — commonly ten to thirty minutes. Do not extend it, and do not sleep in it.

Is a more expensive belt better?

Price mostly tracks panel area, build quality, battery and whether massage is included. Beyond about $200 in this format you are largely paying for brand. Below about $60, something is usually missing.
