Caps are the widest price range in the category. You can spend $100 or $800 on devices that look broadly similar in photographs, and the difference is not always visible in the specifications either. It is a format where knowing what to check matters more than usual.
This guide covers the eight checks that actually distinguish caps, why the price range is so wide, the comfort factors nobody lists on a spec sheet, and the Vyalight cap set out in full — including where our documentation is complete and where it is not.

The short answer: what should you look for in a red light cap?
Published wavelengths in nanometres, an emitter count with the unit clarified, coverage that reaches the areas you care about, a weight and fit you can wear for a full session, defined timing modes rather than an on switch, cordless operation, and a warranty covering the whole device rather than the array alone.

The eight checks
1. Coverage — where the array actually is
The most consequential check and the one most often skipped. A cap can be full head-sized and carry an array covering only the crown. Look for a description or diagram of where the emitters sit: crown only, crown and mid-scalp, or full coverage including the hairline and sides.
If a listing shows only the outside of the cap, ask for a photograph of the inside. A seller who cannot supply one is telling you something.
2. Emitter count — and the unit
The number that sells caps and the one least comparable between brands.

Our cap is specified as 180 LEDs with three chips each. Quoted as chips that would be 540, which would look far more impressive next to another brand's package count and would be exactly as informative. Ask which unit is being used before comparing anything.
3. Wavelengths
Stated in nanometres or not stated. Caps commonly pair visible red around 630–660 nm with near-infrared around 850 nm, both of which sit inside the range appearing in the research literature — the 2025 GeroScience review lists 660, 670, 810, 830 and 850 nm among wavelengths studied.
Our cap is specified at 660 nm and 850 nm. That is a check we pass, and it is worth noting that our own comb and masks do not, so this is not a claim that everything we sell is fully documented.
4. Fit and head size
Look for a stated adjustment range, and for adjustment that is genuine rather than a token strap. Consider also hair volume: a cap that fits over short hair may be tight over a lot of it, and a cap sized generously will slide on a smaller head.
If a cap only stays put when tightened to the point of pressure marks, it is the wrong size. Inside the return window that is a returns question, not something to get used to.
5. Weight and weight distribution
Rarely published and heavily determinant of whether a cap is worn. A cap concentrating its mass at the crown feels much heavier than one distributing it, at the same actual weight. Where a weight is published, treat it as useful information about a manufacturer who thought about the problem.
6. Session control
Defined timing modes with automatic shut-off. Scalp sessions tend to run longer than face sessions, which makes automatic shut-off more important rather than less — a cap is a comfortable thing to fall asleep in.
Look for light modes and timing modes as separate settings rather than bundled. Our cap has five light modes, nine timing modes and two frequency modes as independent controls.
7. Power and charging
Cordless is close to essential in this format, because a cable running from your head to a wall defeats the purpose of a hands-free device. Check the charging standard and whether the battery pack is integrated or worn separately — some caps use a belt-clip pack, which changes how it feels to wear.
8. Warranty and ventilation
Warranty first: LEDs outlast batteries, straps and connectors, so cover for the whole device is what matters. Ours is two years.
Ventilation second, and it never appears on a spec sheet: a sealed cap over a scalp for twenty minutes is warm. Look for perforations, mesh or vents in the photographs. Its absence is a comfort problem you will discover in session two.

On clearance specifically: a 510(k) clearance is a real regulatory status attached to a specific device for a specific stated use, and obtaining one costs real money, which is part of why cleared devices are priced higher. It is not a quality ranking, and it does not validate claims beyond the cleared indication. Vyalight devices are general wellness products and hold no clearance; we say so rather than leaving it ambiguous.
The comfort factors nobody lists
- Ventilation. Twenty minutes under a sealed shell is warm. Vents matter.
- Where the mass sits. Crown-heavy caps feel heavier than their weight.
- Whether emitters press or rest. Rigid emitters against the scalp can be uncomfortable in one position; a well-designed cap distributes contact.
- Whether it can be worn while looking down. If you intend to use it while reading or working, a cap that shifts when you tilt your head is a problem.
- Whether it flattens your hair. Trivial, and it decides whether morning sessions are viable.
- Noise. Some caps have fans. Check reviews for it if a silent session matters to you.

Rows we cannot fill: weight, adjustment range in centimetres, and array coverage expressed as a diagram. Our supplier documentation does not specify them, so they are not on the product page either. If those are decisive for you, that is a legitimate reason to buy elsewhere.
Six red flags
- No photograph of the inside of the cap. The array is the product; if it is not shown, ask why.
- An emitter count with no unit and no coverage description.
- "Red and infrared" with no nanometres.
- Named conditions in the copy. A general wellness device advertising against conditions is overclaiming.
- Before-and-after photographs as the main argument. Lighting, hair styling and camera angle dominate these images.
- No automatic shut-off. In a format people fall asleep in, this is a real omission.
Questions to ask a seller
- What wavelengths, in nanometres?
- Is the emitter figure packages, chips or diodes?
- What area of the scalp does the array cover?
- What does it weigh, and what is the adjustment range?
- What are the timing modes, and does it shut off automatically?
- Is it ventilated?
- What does the warranty cover, and who pays return shipping?
Frequently asked questions
How many LEDs should a red light cap have?
Not answerable without knowing the unit and the coverage area. A cap quoting chips will show a number three times larger than the same hardware quoted as packages. Ask which is being counted before comparing anything.
Are expensive caps better?
Between about $100 and $300 you are generally buying coverage, build and fit engineering, which are real. Above that, brand, industrial design and sometimes a regulatory clearance dominate. A well-specified cap in the middle band is a reasonable purchase.
How long should a cap session be?
Whatever the device's timing mode specifies. Ours offers nine; pick one and be consistent rather than varying each session. Do not extend beyond the programme — the dose relationship in the research is biphasic.
Can I use a cap on wet hair?
Not unless it is water-rated, and most are not. Ours is not. Dry hair, no styling products.
Does hair thickness affect which cap to choose?
Practically, yes — more hair means a tighter fit and a more effective barrier between emitters and scalp. Look for a genuine adjustment range and, if you have a lot of hair, section it before fitting rather than bunching it underneath.
Cap or comb?
A cap if you want hands-free whole-scalp sessions and will use them. A comb if you want to spend less to find out whether the routine survives, or if you want something water-rated and portable. The comparison is in the scalp routine guide.
How do I compare two caps with different emitter counts?
Convert them to the same unit first, which usually means asking. A cap advertising 540 diodes and one advertising 180 LEDs may be the same hardware described differently — 180 packages at three chips each is 540 chips. Then divide by the coverage area, because density over the scalp is what the count is a proxy for.
Are cheap caps under $100 worth considering?
Sometimes, but check three things specifically: whether the array covers more than the crown, whether there is automatic shut-off, and whether the warranty covers the whole device. Those are the three most common omissions at that price, and each of them matters more than the emitter count.
Does a cap need to be ventilated?
It makes a real difference to comfort over a twenty-minute session, and it never appears on a specification sheet. Look for perforations or mesh in the product photographs. If you cannot see any, assume there are none and expect the session to be warm.
Is a cap worth it over a general-purpose device?

Should I worry that a cap has no published weight?
It is a gap worth noticing rather than a reason to walk away, and it is a gap in our own listing too. Weight and its distribution decide whether a cap is comfortable for a full session, so where a manufacturer does publish it, treat that as a small signal that someone thought about the wearing experience.
